Figures show that the number of households in the UK that own at least one pet is steadily increasing, with more and more of us investing in an animal companion every year. Although smaller animals like hamsters and rabbits are less likely to contribute to the cleanliness of the house overall, as they are usually kept isolated, pets that roam freely about the rooms of your house, like cats and dogs, are probably a bit of nuisance when they start shedding all over the place.

Pet hair can be a huge hassle when you’re trying to clean your house, especially on carpets. It seems to get everywhere and you can’t remove it easily. Ten seconds on a clean surface and suddenly you’re covered with hair yourself! Most standard vacuum cleaners, however powerful, struggle with the daunting task of picking up pet hair. There are, however, some specific designs that have special features to help them deal with the furry problem.

Dyson has a range of “Animal” vacuum cleaners that are designed to pick up pet hair with a specially designed mini-turbine head. The DC33 is an upright model, available for £299 from online department store www.very.co.uk. Also upright are the DC25 and DC27 models, both with individual features worth investigating, priced at £299 and £329 respectively. Dyson also has a cylinder Animal model, the DC32, also costing £299. For those really hard to reach places, the DC31 Animal Hand Held is perfect at £159.

Also sold on www.very.co.uk is the Miele Cat and Dog Bagged Cylinder Cleaner S5261, available for £199 and specially designed not just to pick up animal hair and dirt, but to erase pet odours from your carpet as well with an active air filter. Like the Dyson Animal range, the Miele Cat and Dog has mini-turbines in its cleaning head to thoroughly clean your floor of any resilient dirt and fur.

Visit Very today and choose amongst several different vacuum cleaners and matching vacuum storage bags that fit your needs. Pets, messy children, or dust filled corners that are hard to reach – Very’s range of vacuum cleaners has a perfect model for everyone.

Nowhere is a person happier I believe than in their garden, pottering around tends the borders, weeding and tending in to the needs of the plants. There are times however when you may want to develop new areas of your garden or create some landscape features. DIY landscaping projects in the garden are not as daunting as you would first imagine, there is nothing more satisfying than completing some landscaping work yourself and then having the fun task of choosing the new plants for the area and watching the plants grow and mature.

Great projects to get involved with:

Digging a pond – A pond is a wonderful addition to any garden; they provide habitats for wildlife and can encourage new species of wildlife to visit/reside in your garden. They also provide a great opportunity to add new aquatic plants to the garden such as lilies and bull rushes.

Garden Terracing – If your garden has a slope or gradient to it (or you have the ability to create one) then a garden terrace can be a great addition to any garden. The terracing can be created using concrete retaining wall blocks (normally used for industrial projects but readily available) to hold back the soil and create the terrace structure. The terrace can be finished off with a patio where you can sit and enjoy your garden in these late summer evenings.

Create a themed area – One of my favourite projects which I recently completed in my garden was transforming my tired rockery into a Mediterranean style rockery which I planted with herbs which are native to the Mediterranean area. The rockery looks amazing as purple Sage and Rosemary sprawl across the rocks and it smells divine. An extra bonus is the fact that I now have fresh herbs for my cooking!

Topiary – This is a tricky skill to master, but if you have the patience the results can be fantastic. My front garden used to be a tired and under-used space, I had an old pampus grass and a few roses – totally underwhelming. So I pulled everything up and I have created a topiary garden with a number of trees and bushes which I am training and clipping into fantastic shapes, the garden has been covered with decorative gravel ensuring that the focus is on the topiary bushes. They have certainly been a head turner and people always stop to look at my garden as they walk past.

We all know that smart home electronics can make life easier as well as save money. But with all the products available, how do you choose which is the best investment. Read on for some useful tips.
1. Determine what your greatest need is. Are your heating and electrical bills going through the roof? Are summer or winter months particularly costly? Are your children frequently leaving the lights on and/or the water running after they leave the room? Is Grandma living with you? Are you concerned that she won’t turn on the light when she needs it
and risk falling? Is the crime rate in your area increasing? Smart home electronics can solve many of these problems.
2. Have an energy audit. Many utility companies provide audits that show you where your home is wasting energy. These can be eye opening: You’ll be surprised at how much heat can sink through those cracks.

3. Set your priorities. Once you have this information, you can begin reading about smart home electronics. From your list in step one, pick your three greatest needs.

4. Determine your budget. If you have several immediate priorities, would it be worth it to spend more for integrated smart home electronics. Integrated systems control several building systems, such as lighting, security and/or climate control. However, it is also important to consider that in the event of a system failure, you may lose all those capabilities whereas separate systems may continue independently.

5. Begin looking at products. Ask your friends what smart home electronics they have. Visit home improvement stores and home shows to find out what’s available. Read product and consumer reviews about particular products. Compare information on prices and reliability. Smart home electronics can be a major purchase, so you want to invest your
money wisely.

6. If two products have wildly different prices, find out why. Does one offer more “bells and whistles” than you need? Do both products include all the parts you need? Does the less expensive model have a reliable reputation? Check the warranty information.

7. Consider installation. The trend these days is to wireless smart home electronics. These are fairly easy to install but some expert help may be needed, depending on the circumstances. If you need professional installation, look for a contractor nearby who is very familiar with the product.

8. Consider ease of operation. Remember the old joke about not being able to program a VCR? Well, what good are smart home electronics if you don’t know how to use them? When you select a product, make sure the installation and instruction manuals are clear and easily understandable. If you don’t, you will have bought an expensive conversation
starter that won’t do you any good at all.

9. Purchase the products and have them installed. If you’re doing it yourself, be sure to follow all instructions to the letter.

10. Enjoy. By installing smart home electronics, you have gone along way to making yourlife more comfortable, convenient and safe. The money you saved will soon come back to you in lower bills.

Many homeowners don’t realize it, but they are paying for their home heating system twice – or sometimes many times over. In addition to paying for the installation of their heating system and general refueling, homeowners with traditional heating systems also pay quite a bit for maintenance. For example, some homeowners with oil systems pay regularly for duct cleaning, air filters for the furnace, as well as other maintenance costs. Additionally, many homeowners with traditional heating systems pay for gadgets and items in order to counter some of the problems associated with traditional heating systems. For example, some homeowners with traditional heating systems may need to install carpeting in order to cope with cold floors while others add electric blankets, Nuheat mats and portable heaters (along with their costs) to their homes to counter the drafts and other problems traditional system cause. Of course, it might be easier to just get electric floor heat.

Homeowners with electric floor heating systems simply do not have these problems. They pay once to have an electric floor warming system installed in their home and then they have hassle-free electric radiant floor heat to enjoy for a lifetime. Plus, since floor heat is energy efficient, homeowners with heated floor are often able to save on their utility bills as well. Quality heated floors do not require any maintenance and work so well that a home stays perfectly cozy – without the added expense of carpets, heaters, electric blankets, or other expenses. With in floor heat, you pay for your heating system once – when your radiant floor heat is installed. Your radiant floor heat system does not continue costing you money. Since radiant floor heating systems keep your home more comfortable, you also don’t need to spend money on anything else to remain toasty and warm all year long.

Plus, quality radiant heat and radiant heating systems, such as SunTouch floor warming, come with comprehensive warranties. In the unlikely event that you do need maintenance or work on your Suntouch floor systems, the warranty on your radiant heat system will take care of all the work for you. You can get maintenance without having to dig deep for additional cash. This makes electric floor heat an even smarter money value. With electric floor heat, you enjoy whisper-quiet heating, comfortable heat, energy savings, and potentially higher air quality. In floor heating allows you to get rid of ducts, vents, baseboard heaters, radiators, and other equipment as well, so that you enjoy more room and space in your home as you enjoy a better value as well.

There are many places to go to find the sofa of your dreams but the most important thing about buying a sofa is making sure that you have done as much research as possible and are not simply purchasing from the first place you find. So how should you research your sofa?

Well the first place to start is online of course. It is recommended to find a handful of 10 interior desing blogs that feature sofas. Once you have found these blogs then print out all the sofa designs that appeal to you. This will then act as a visual reference for conversations pertaining to your sofa choice. From here you and your partner will begin to form a clear idea of what tastes you have in common.

Once you have agreed on what type of sofa you wish to purchase you should then agree a budget. What is the minimum and maximum you are willing to spend on a sofa. It is important to have a minimum so that you are both in agreeement as to the level of quality you are looking for.

Having set the budget it is useful to look into the variety of online stores that sell the sofa you like. Huge online stores such as sofasofa.co.uk offer a massive range of sofas ranging from modern sofas to classic leather sofas and the like. Huge online stores such as this are certianly a great place to start your online search because of their scale and value.

It is then always worthwhile to check out your local high street stores and see if they have any sofas that fit your brief.

Whatever your process in purchasing a sofa, make sure to enjoy your day and avoid conflict. Good luck with your choice!!

Here are some common tips from the central heating installation experts along with some best practice on energy preservation and cost savings.

Cost Savings with your Heating System:

The simplest way of reducing your heating bill is to reduce the temperature in your room thermostat by 1c. Although it sounds like too small a change to make an impact, the truth is that it will reduce your heating bills by up to 10%.

Operation of TRV (thermostatic radiator valve):

Most radiators come with a preinstalled thermostatic radiator valve which allows you to control the temperature of individual rooms. It has a range of temperatures that goes up to 22c. It is important to ensure the TRV is not obstructed by curtains or furniture, to allow it to read the room temperature accurately, and ensure it shuts the radiator down if the room has reached the preset temperature to conserve energy and cost.

Getting the temperature balanced:

In order to adjust the right temperature for each room, it is recommend installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) which allow you to set different temperature in different rooms. This way you can have a hot bathroom and cool bedroom preset individually.

If the Radiator is not Working Properly:

It is most likely there is air in the heating system, and the radiator needs bleeding. You need to get a bleeding key (in most DIY stores), and bleed the air out of the radiator. It is important to make sure that the system is turned off when doing it.

An Unvented Hot Water Cylinder:

This is also called “Pressurised” cylinder, an excellent way of storing your domestic hot water, and delivering it to the user at a mains pressure. This bypasses the problem of lack of pressure in the hot taps and in the shower. Furthermore, because there is no need for cold water tank in the loft, it frees up space in the loft.

Unvented cylinders can handle high pressure, and they have a pre-installed set of check and pressure control valves to protect them against too much pressure building up.

Deyette said creating a warm, cozy and inviting atmosphere indoors changes your mood.

“It’s the same thing with the holidays. I’m all about getting a wreath on the door or getting a tree. Even if it’s still 80 degrees in the daytime, a little tree or wreath on the door changes our mood. It makes things more festive,” she said.

“The number one thing to change from spring or summer to fall is color,” said Phil Tracey, style expert for HomeGoods.

While pumpkin and dark green are obvious colors, Tracey said he also likes to incorporate unique and vibrant colors. This year chartreuse and fuchsia are his colors of choice.

“These two colors easily coordinate with other colors in the home,” he said suggesting they be used on pillows, decorative accessories and accent chairs.

“Accent chairs are big this season. We’re not going out and buying a new settee or a sofa set. We’re just getting one chair or a chair and an ottoman,” he said citing the economy as a factor in people’s decorating decisions.

Deyette said the furniture’s look also can be changed for the season with decorative pillows and throws.

“Obviously you won’t swap out your furniture, but you can swap out pillows and cotton throws. In the fall or winter instead of using cotton, use chenille or a faux fur.”
