he kitchen can be the busiest room of any home, particularly in any family home – cooking, eating and socialising all take place within the room. With so much going on in the room many look to try and create extra space through kitchen re-designs or even extensions.

A kitchen re-design can be the cheaper option than an extension, and extra space can be achieved through intelligent design and layout, using kitchen furniture (particularly bespoke furniture) to maximise the available space.
On additional option which is becoming increasingly popular (just check out the home design magazines!) is adding a kitchen island to utilise floor space to create new storage and work space. As well as being extremely practical they look stunning and add a contemporary feel to the design, and also act as the focal point for the room. Just check out the great range of kitchen islands for sale across the internet and on the high street to find the one most suited for you. I would recommend (if your budget allows) a bespoke kitchen island which can be made to your specific design and requirements allowing you to create the perfect kitchen… functional and stylish!

Our home is our pride and joy and therefore we want to make sure that it looks as nice as possible. It is our home that we return to after a long day at work and it is where we spend relaxing time with our family. It is important that each room in the house is as welcoming as possible. It is also important that each of the rooms in the house have their own role and that the décor we choose reflects this. For example you want your bedroom to be somewhere that you can relax and switch off after a stressful day but you want your living room to be somewhere that your family can spend time in comfort. All of the rooms in your house are just as important and of course kitchens are included in this.

As with anything the way that we decorate our kitchens will vary and is vastly down to personal preference. Most people would agree though that our kitchens are the most practical room in the house and therefore they need to be rooms that we can use for the purpose that they were intended. You can often see kitchens that are filled with clutter and have no room to room. This just means that cooking and preparing meals in that room becomes a chore.

It is usually preferred that kitchens are reasonably minimalist. That is why cupboard space and shelving is so important. We can put away our kitchen utensils and they don’t need to clutter up work tops. That way our work surfaces can be kept clean, tidy and spacious and our kitchens can return back to being pleasurable rooms to cook in. Lighting is also important and definitely something that should be considered when it comes to decorating your kitchen, because of course you want to easily be able to see the food that you are preparing.

Here are some common tips from the central heating installation experts along with some best practice on energy preservation and cost savings.

Cost Savings with your Heating System:

The simplest way of reducing your heating bill is to reduce the temperature in your room thermostat by 1c. Although it sounds like too small a change to make an impact, the truth is that it will reduce your heating bills by up to 10%.

Operation of TRV (thermostatic radiator valve):

Most radiators come with a preinstalled thermostatic radiator valve which allows you to control the temperature of individual rooms. It has a range of temperatures that goes up to 22c. It is important to ensure the TRV is not obstructed by curtains or furniture, to allow it to read the room temperature accurately, and ensure it shuts the radiator down if the room has reached the preset temperature to conserve energy and cost.

Getting the temperature balanced:

In order to adjust the right temperature for each room, it is recommend installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) which allow you to set different temperature in different rooms. This way you can have a hot bathroom and cool bedroom preset individually.

If the Radiator is not Working Properly:

It is most likely there is air in the heating system, and the radiator needs bleeding. You need to get a bleeding key (in most DIY stores), and bleed the air out of the radiator. It is important to make sure that the system is turned off when doing it.

An Unvented Hot Water Cylinder:

This is also called “Pressurised” cylinder, an excellent way of storing your domestic hot water, and delivering it to the user at a mains pressure. This bypasses the problem of lack of pressure in the hot taps and in the shower. Furthermore, because there is no need for cold water tank in the loft, it frees up space in the loft.

Unvented cylinders can handle high pressure, and they have a pre-installed set of check and pressure control valves to protect them against too much pressure building up.

A well laid out smart kitchen in a home reveals the quality of the domestic life and if you are planning of selling your house, this can be a key selling point because kitchen is often high up on potential buyers’ wish lists.

Firstly, think how you can change your current kitchen for a better looking one. Are you looking to replace the old kitchen units, or think about doing a complete refit ? Also, you may just want to replace the doors of your units, but if you need a larger change, It’s worth getting advice and quotes from a range of kitchen Companies who will probably visit your home and their consultant may come up with great ideas for you.

You may also look at offers available at DIY stores, that offer a kitchen design service either in-store or on-line. Then you may have to find a good kitchen fitter and someone with the necessary qualifications to move any gas or electricity points that may need relocating.

Kitchens can vary in price. If you are planning to sell your house, the outlay proportionate of the new kitchen should be kept to the value of your home. Otherwise you will be over-spending on a kitchen in order to sell your home and you may not recover its cost in your sale price. If you’re not selling the house, it’s better to buy the best kitchen you can afford. Kitchen is the most heavy duty used area of the house, a focal point, and you may spend a lot of time in them, so it is worth spending something extra to get it absolutely right for you.

A few points to remember:

Never be under any obligation, financially or otherwise, if you need to invite a kitchen consultant to your home.

Be completely happy with your new kitchen layout before any work is started.

Be sure about the amount you plan to spend is realistic – think about added value if you’re selling up.

Be sure about the tradesmen you deal with – are they qualified to do the job ?

Your new kitchen should have guarantees – both for the kitchen including appliances and its fitting.

Set up a budget and make plans about different ways of financing your kitchen.

Can I afford it?

Completely replacing a kitchen can be a bottomless pit financially. You need to set a budget and do your best to stick to it. You may find that structurally, your kitchen cabinets are in good shape and you can give you kitchen a make-over simply by replacing cabinet doors, worktops and tiling. This can represent substantial savings.

How do I use my kitchen?

Think of the ways in which you use your current kitchen, is it a family space with a table, would a breakfast bar be suitable, do you need plenty of cupboard space, is a wine fridge a good idea. How often do you entertain, do you hate washing up? Think about how your new kitchen will fit into your lifestyle or even change it and try to incorporate these ideas into your new design.

When you start using a water softener, at first you may see it as a luxury spending. However, you will find its long-term benefits, such as improvement in quality of your life and it’s life-changing benefits. Water softners have come into place around a 100 years ago, the industry has worked on improving its ability to operate on less water usage.

Hard water & soft water:

‘Hard’ water contains more minerals (calcium and magnesium) than ordinary water. Water softening is used to remove the ions that cause the water to be hard, which usually involve calcium and magnesium ions.

Green benefits:

Water softeners have a number of enhancing abilities which are useful in helping to cut down on carbon emissions by removing the build up of scale that forms insides pipes and heating systems.

Using water softeners benefit the environment, which enables the home user to use less soaps and cleaning products. They help increase the life-span of various appliances around the house and help reduce the number of visits by service engineers to maintain and repair the appliances from the damages of limescale.

According to commentators, the real benefits of water softeners are that they use water to regenerate. However it is not the case today- the water softener regenerates the effectiveness of the resin used to soften the water by washing it with brine, usually once a day.

Improvement in lifestyle:

You will not have any problems with your shower blocking also your sinks will stay clean. The reduction of scale will keep your boiler running efficiently. Your hours spent in cleaning will be vastly reduced as your shower cubicle will stay clean for weeks and need limited polishing up.

Savings in the home

You can save a vast amounts of money on various cleaning products, such as scale removers, shower cleaners, and floor cleaners etc as well as on your hot water heating system by removing its scale.

While water softeners will benefit you economically and environmentally, you will also have the experience of a true luxury of washing and showering in scum free water.
