Nowhere is a person happier I believe than in their garden, pottering around tends the borders, weeding and tending in to the needs of the plants. There are times however when you may want to develop new areas of your garden or create some landscape features. DIY landscaping projects in the garden are not as daunting as you would first imagine, there is nothing more satisfying than completing some landscaping work yourself and then having the fun task of choosing the new plants for the area and watching the plants grow and mature.

Great projects to get involved with:

Digging a pond – A pond is a wonderful addition to any garden; they provide habitats for wildlife and can encourage new species of wildlife to visit/reside in your garden. They also provide a great opportunity to add new aquatic plants to the garden such as lilies and bull rushes.

Garden Terracing – If your garden has a slope or gradient to it (or you have the ability to create one) then a garden terrace can be a great addition to any garden. The terracing can be created using concrete retaining wall blocks (normally used for industrial projects but readily available) to hold back the soil and create the terrace structure. The terrace can be finished off with a patio where you can sit and enjoy your garden in these late summer evenings.

Create a themed area – One of my favourite projects which I recently completed in my garden was transforming my tired rockery into a Mediterranean style rockery which I planted with herbs which are native to the Mediterranean area. The rockery looks amazing as purple Sage and Rosemary sprawl across the rocks and it smells divine. An extra bonus is the fact that I now have fresh herbs for my cooking!

Topiary – This is a tricky skill to master, but if you have the patience the results can be fantastic. My front garden used to be a tired and under-used space, I had an old pampus grass and a few roses – totally underwhelming. So I pulled everything up and I have created a topiary garden with a number of trees and bushes which I am training and clipping into fantastic shapes, the garden has been covered with decorative gravel ensuring that the focus is on the topiary bushes. They have certainly been a head turner and people always stop to look at my garden as they walk past.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to beautify your homes? We all know that interior decoration has become an important feature for modern homes; a feature that when approached with aptness changes the whole scenario. With technology altering the interior decoration and hi-fi systems replacing the natural endeavours of homes, it only takes a minute to decide how to change the conventional home into a smart home.

The key aim is to include products and hi-fi systems that change your home into a mini-gadget store is the budget. Tech products from Very.co.uk solve this very target. When starting with the techno-invasion, make sure that you look out for the products that are of utmost need. For a gadget person, hi-fi systems such as that of CD system, jukebox, as well as iPod dock are key components. However, you must keep in focus that you are keeping these systems within the energy audit. When you start the lookout for the products, you can begin with comparing the product review as well as the prices of the individual items.

Tech products from Very.co.uk come with a great assortment of collections pertaining to hi-fi systems such as camcorders, music systems, as well as other electrical appliances that would render the look that you have been dreaming for your home. Once purchasing is done with, the next target would be the installation of the systems. The best feature of the latest technologies is their wireless mode. These require minimal guidance for installation and are perfect for a gadget lover.

We have all seen the home improvement shows on Channel Four in the UK and marvelled at the fantastic homes they show buyers around. I don’t know about you but I am always impressed at how light and airy these homes feel, but the price tag of these homes is always a little to high for me! So I got to thinking about how I could create this light and airy feeling in my own home. So as a project I decided to re-decorate my living room as it a very dark room in my home and often felt smaller than it really is.

The first thing I did was to strip the dark varnish off the wooden furniture in the room, once this varnish was stripped off, I sanded the furniture down and covered in a light beeswax to preserve the wood but produce furniture which was lighter and not as austere as it had previously been.

The walls in the room were wallpapered in a floral pattern so I stripped off the paper and had the room re-plastered, this left me with a fantastic blank canvas which I painted in a pale yellow, and painted all the skirting boards and doors in a pure brilliant white. Already the room was feeling brighter but I wanted to complete the effect, so I moved the leather sofa into the study and bought a smaller chez lounge, which I had re-upholstered in light coloured cotton.

I knew that if I added to many decorations to the room it would start to feel cluttered and small again so I had to choose carefully, I bought a fantastic large overmantle mirror which I hung above the fireplace and it reflected the morning sunlight throughout the room to stunning effect.

Finally I really wanted a family portrait up on the wall but I didn’t want a formal photograph in a dark wooden frame on the wall, so I did a little research on line and found these great tips on creating a family portrait, and so I got a friend to take a photo of my family in our local park which I had printed on a canvas which now takes pride of place on the wall in my living room.

The finished room looks fantastic, light, airy and on a sunny day it seems to glitter in the sun – a great home improvement project which I am sure has added value to my home as well as producing a great room to enjoy.

We all know that smart home electronics can make life easier as well as save money. But with all the products available, how do you choose which is the best investment. Read on for some useful tips.
1. Determine what your greatest need is. Are your heating and electrical bills going through the roof? Are summer or winter months particularly costly? Are your children frequently leaving the lights on and/or the water running after they leave the room? Is Grandma living with you? Are you concerned that she won’t turn on the light when she needs it
and risk falling? Is the crime rate in your area increasing? Smart home electronics can solve many of these problems.
2. Have an energy audit. Many utility companies provide audits that show you where your home is wasting energy. These can be eye opening: You’ll be surprised at how much heat can sink through those cracks.

3. Set your priorities. Once you have this information, you can begin reading about smart home electronics. From your list in step one, pick your three greatest needs.

4. Determine your budget. If you have several immediate priorities, would it be worth it to spend more for integrated smart home electronics. Integrated systems control several building systems, such as lighting, security and/or climate control. However, it is also important to consider that in the event of a system failure, you may lose all those capabilities whereas separate systems may continue independently.

5. Begin looking at products. Ask your friends what smart home electronics they have. Visit home improvement stores and home shows to find out what’s available. Read product and consumer reviews about particular products. Compare information on prices and reliability. Smart home electronics can be a major purchase, so you want to invest your
money wisely.

6. If two products have wildly different prices, find out why. Does one offer more “bells and whistles” than you need? Do both products include all the parts you need? Does the less expensive model have a reliable reputation? Check the warranty information.

7. Consider installation. The trend these days is to wireless smart home electronics. These are fairly easy to install but some expert help may be needed, depending on the circumstances. If you need professional installation, look for a contractor nearby who is very familiar with the product.

8. Consider ease of operation. Remember the old joke about not being able to program a VCR? Well, what good are smart home electronics if you don’t know how to use them? When you select a product, make sure the installation and instruction manuals are clear and easily understandable. If you don’t, you will have bought an expensive conversation
starter that won’t do you any good at all.

9. Purchase the products and have them installed. If you’re doing it yourself, be sure to follow all instructions to the letter.

10. Enjoy. By installing smart home electronics, you have gone along way to making yourlife more comfortable, convenient and safe. The money you saved will soon come back to you in lower bills.

Some parts of the existing plumbing work might have to be replaced altogether. Look out for any prominent leaks or weak spots and make replacements for these connections.

Wallpaper Steamer Stripping Technique: This technique works on the following principle: a kettle sends steam to a plate of distribution along a crack. The steam is pushed through to dissolve the adhesive by holding the paper for some seconds. The paper then becomes easy to strip. Care should be taken that the steam does not work on a particular area for long as it may blow up the upper plaster-layer.

Also, be careful as steam can cause burns. Ensure adequate ventilation in the room if you work using a steamer. Too much steam in the room could possibly soften the ceiling plaster if it is in bad condition to an extent that it might fall.

he kitchen can be the busiest room of any home, particularly in any family home – cooking, eating and socialising all take place within the room. With so much going on in the room many look to try and create extra space through kitchen re-designs or even extensions.

A kitchen re-design can be the cheaper option than an extension, and extra space can be achieved through intelligent design and layout, using kitchen furniture (particularly bespoke furniture) to maximise the available space.
On additional option which is becoming increasingly popular (just check out the home design magazines!) is adding a kitchen island to utilise floor space to create new storage and work space. As well as being extremely practical they look stunning and add a contemporary feel to the design, and also act as the focal point for the room. Just check out the great range of kitchen islands for sale across the internet and on the high street to find the one most suited for you. I would recommend (if your budget allows) a bespoke kitchen island which can be made to your specific design and requirements allowing you to create the perfect kitchen… functional and stylish!

Many homeowners don’t realize it, but they are paying for their home heating system twice – or sometimes many times over. In addition to paying for the installation of their heating system and general refueling, homeowners with traditional heating systems also pay quite a bit for maintenance. For example, some homeowners with oil systems pay regularly for duct cleaning, air filters for the furnace, as well as other maintenance costs.
